Toss: World XI have won the toss and have opted to field
March 3, 2009. One of the darkest days in cricket when the sport was held hostage by the terrorists. The Sri Lankan cricket team bus was attacked by the militants in Lahore and they were forced to return home midway through the series. Not only did the incident send shock waves across the globe, the international cricket came to a standstill in Pakistan too. The country was deprived of hosting ICC events like World Cup. It took 6 years for a Test-playing nation to set foot on Pakistan soil, when Zimbabwe paid a visit for two T20Is and three ODIs in 2015.
Live scenes: World XI players are doing a lap of honour on a tuk-tukish kinda vehicle. There’s Tahir, Amla, Miller, Bailey, Elliott and Cutting that I can spot. Oh and two other tuk-tuks follow. Also, Sammy is in smiles. Who’s surprised.
World XI have won the toss and have opted to field
World XI (Playing XI): Tamim Iqbal, Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis(c), David Miller, Grant Elliott, Thisara Perera, Tim Paine(w), Ben Cutting, Darren Sammy, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir
Pakistan (Playing XI): Ahmed Shehzad, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed(w/c), Imad Wasim, Fahim Ashraf, Shadab Khan, Sohail Khan, Hasan Ali, Rumman Raees
Sarfraz: We wanted to bat first anyway. Players are excited. Eight of them are playing at home for the first time. Focus is on cricket. Happy with the team. (Translated from Hindi/Urdu)
Du Plessis: “We will bowl first. The conditions are pretty new for all of us. We haven’t played here for a long time. We have a long batting line up and bowling first gives us an opportunity to have a look at the wicket. It’s a huge honour to be the captain and we are playing for a greater cause. It’s a nice relaxed bunch of guys. Pakistan side have been playing together for a while, so they will be a dangerous side. Hopefully we can have a few match-winners tonight.”
